In this wooded section in the southwest of the NSG Haverlahwiese open-cast mine, visitors with an affinity for fairy tales can let their imagination run free: depending on the incidence of light, the trees show their mystical side 🧚♀️🧙♂️🧝♂️!
This is due to the earlier use of medium-sized forests, a traditional method of forest management that was widespread from the Middle Ages to the middle of the 19th century. Hornbeams and linden trees were used as firewood every 20 to 30 years. On the other hand, oaks and red beeches were allowed to stand much longer and were only removed as construction timber in isolated cases.
In some places a little off the path you can discover interesting cracks in the forest floor - you should be careful when exploring, because maybe this is also access to the dwarf kingdom ?!
