The square market square (marte, 1368), which was probably already marked out with the town elevation, lies on the old border between the Euskirchen-Disternicher and Kessenicher districts and above the east-west axis of the city. It developed through legal privileges (1302 town charter, 1322 market charter) into a fruit, cattle, junk and wool market. The square was framed by a bourgeois representative building.
In 19./20. Century the center of public life with fairgrounds, pageants and political and church events. A pillory (1625) or drill house and a public fountain (1606), which was replaced by a pump pillar (1867), used to be part of the design of the square. The quaint old Hotel Joisten has been torn down. Since 1984 a city fountain with the historical trades has been pointing to the local economic history.
