After a descent through sparse cedar and cypress forest, you reach the Hosshinmon-oji shrine. Hosshinmon means “Soul Gate” and the shrine marks the entrance to the hallowed grounds of the Hongu Grand Shrine. Here it is important to purify yourself spiritually before entering the shrine gate.
