The village of Bergen was built around a chapel on the site of today's Ruïnekerk. In 1422 the chapel was expanded to a single-aisled, later to a three-aisled hall church and was one of the largest churches in Holland at the time.
“On February 21, 1574, during the Eighty Years War, the church was looted and burned down by beggars under the leadership of Diederik Sonoy. Much of the church, including the tower, was lost. In the period up to 1597 the choir of the destroyed church was rebuilt. Part of it was completed in 1594; This year was marked on a pole above the pulpit. After the Reformation, the Ruïnekerk was used as a Protestant church.

During the Battle of Mons in 1799 there was fierce fighting over the church. The many bullet holes and impacts in the church are a reminder of this. "
