On the side of the Cologne Cathedral facing Roncalliplatz there is a memorial in memory of the great World Youth Day of August 2005. It shows the two Popes John Paul II (who invited them, but then died in April 2005) and his successor Benedict XVI ., which received the World Youth Day logo from the hand of its predecessor.

Pope John Paul II put the 2005 World Youth Day under the motto "We have come to worship HIM", referring to the words of the 'Three Magi', whose relics have been handed down in Chapter 2 of the Gospel of Matthew To be venerated in Cologne Cathedral in 1164. The motif of the World Youth Day logo also takes up this basic idea.
