With its neighboring forts Sint-Joseph and Sint Livinus, Fort Sin-Jacob is part of the Spanish Line of Communication between the locks of Ghent and Hulst. The fort was constructed in 1634 as a simple, square defense structure in the sea wall. a moat more than 10 meters wide surrounded a courtyard that could be reached via a bridge. At the center of the fort was a guardhouse 'watchtower' to monitor the wide tidal area between the line and the Land of Axel against attacks by State Armies.

In the courtyard there is a cannon that faces north (Staatse Legers).
