After the great city fire of 1689, the old town hall on the market square was destroyed and replaced by the still existing building. The new town hall was completed in 1715. Exactly this year, the Margrave of Baden decided to relocate his seat of government from Durlach to the newly founded Karlsruhe. In 1718, the Margrave finally moved with his court.

In the market square is also the so-called love fountain. The fountain is crowned by a naked couple in tender embrace. Around the fountain basin there are eight groups of animals. Also the hedgehogs, rabbits, ravens and toads advertise around each other or are already at the lovemaking.

Around the market square are several cafes. The adjacent streets of the old town are also worth a visit.

The Durlach market square is dominated by the castle. there is a bit of a hustle and bustle here, but pleasant. Some cafes have set up their tables and chairs and the market vendors sell fruit, vegetables and flowers.
