Four bunkers are reminiscent of the First World War, when the Kemmelberg was a British observation post. From its summit they had the best view of the front line, which ran from Messines via Wijtschate to Ypres.

The British soldiers built the shelters in the spring of 1917. They served as underground brigade headquarters with corresponding sleeping quarters. Behind it was a command post that is no longer accessible. Admission is free, tickets are available in the visitor center.

The first aid station bunker still reminds us today.
There was also a command bunker here where strategic decisions were made, which in turn decided the life and death of many frontline soldiers.
Please note, there is limited parking space at the site. A walk from Kemmel is definitely worthwhile. We recommend a walk from the French cemetery to the Lettenberg bunkers. This hiking trail takes you past various scars in nature. You walk past various bomb craters and deformed trees that were once truncated by bomb impacts. Fortunately, nature is recovering from this murderous conflict.
