The Kalkum Castle monument is a place steeped in history, with a history going back more than 1000 years. It ranges from the royal court in the 9th century to a medieval knight's seat and a baroque castle of the Counts of Winkelhausen to the glamorous country residence of the Counts and Princes of Hatzfeld in the 19th century. A Countess von Hatzfeld was a great sponsor of Ferdinand Lassalle, for whom she built a mausoleum in the castle park that still exists today after his death.

Very nice and well-preserved lock. The park can be visited free of charge, there are some benches available to linger

We parked in the car park at the Kalkumer Schlossallee station.
On weekdays, this is partly reserved for teachers and students from the high school next door.
So you are almost exactly in the middle between the castle and D - Kaiserswerth and from there you can start your hike or bike tour into the beautiful surroundings, to the castle, to the Rhine or simply through the rapeseed fields.
I cannot say whether there would be more aircraft noise during normal flight operations - Düsseldorf Airport is not far away. (There was a lockdown during our visit!)

Great castle with a landscape park and lots of feathered residents. Views, reflections and beautiful benches that invite you to rest. Don't miss the Kalkum Castle and Park.

Kalkum Castle is a moated castle in the district of the same name in the north of Düsseldorf, about two kilometers northeast of Kaiserswerth, and an extraordinary example of classicist castle architecture in the Rhineland. Together with the associated park, it has been a listed building since January 18, 1984.

Düsseldorf's oldest district, very romantic with an old castle ruin and beautiful half-timbered houses. Right on the Rhine you can dangle your legs and watch the ferry.
There are good restaurants and nice shops and the real currywurst from Berlin.

We treat ourselves to a dry break on a fine bench in the face of the picturesque, feudal backdrop (even the castle moat is flooding).

The castle park is very well maintained and invites you to take a stroll. The shady arcade is particularly beautiful in summer. The branching paths offer interesting perspectives of the castle. Unfortunately, the interior of the castle is not accessible.

My tip from May '21 comes from the lockdown period, when there was almost no air traffic! I can't judge what that looks like under normal conditions!

Kalkum Castle, located in the Düsseldorf district of the same name, is a neoclassical moated castle with an adjoining English landscape garden.
The first documented mention of a royal court in Kalkum dates back to 947 and refers to it as Calechheim. The first mention of the Lords of Kalkum dates back to 1176. The Gothic predecessor of Kalkum Castle was demolished in the 17th century at the instigation of Ludger von Winkelhausen. In its place, a Baroque castle was built between 1656 and 1663, consisting of a manor house and a multi-winged outer bailey. The castle underwent a neoclassical remodeling between 1808 and 1825 under Countess Maria Anna von Hatzfeld, who entrusted Georg Peter Leydel with the redesign of the complex. Leydel created a stronger symmetry of the castle buildings by dissolving the separation between the manor house and the outer bailey.

Kalkum Castle is a classicist moated castle in the Kalkum district of Düsseldorf, about two kilometers northeast of Kaiserswerth. It is a remarkable example of classicist castle architecture in the Rhineland and has been a listed building as a whole since January 18, 1984.

The castle has a long history that goes back to the Middle Ages. Originally it was a knight's seat of the Lords of Kalkum, later it passed to the von Winkelhausen family, who remodeled the castle in the Baroque style in the 17th century. Between 1808 and 1814, the castle was rebuilt in a classicist style by the Krefeld architect Georg Peter Leydel.

Today the castle is empty, but is used for cultural events such as classical concerts. The approximately 19-hectare castle park in the English landscape style is open to the public.
