Planning for the Diepholz air base began at the beginning of 1934. The Willenberger Marsch, located southwest of the city, was chosen as a suitable site. The city of Diepholz bought the Junkernhäuser estate, which belonged to the Falkenhardt manor, as compensation area for expropriated farmers. At the end of 1934, air construction battalions and the Reich Labor Service began building the airfield. The runway was laid out as a 1000 m diameter grass area. In 1936, the “Luftpark Diepholz” logistics association took over the site and additional buildings (barracks, workshops, warehouses and aircraft hangars) as well as a siding to Diepholz train station were built.
