The Alto de Garajonay is the highest point of the eponymous National Park and thus the island. When the clouds clear, you have an excellent view of the entire island as well as the neighboring islands.

It is the highest point on the island with an altitude of approximately 1485 metres above sea level. It is located in the municipality of Vallehermoso.

In geological terms, Alto de Garajonay was formed during the second volcanic cycle of La Gomera, between 5 and 2 million years ago, and is composed mainly of basaltic and trachybasaltic lava flows. The vegetation in the area includes fayal-brezal, a type of scrubland, and humid monteverde with heather.

In addition, the high point has been a place of archaeological importance, where animal sacrifice altars belonging to the aboriginal Gomera culture have been found. These findings suggest that the area was a large religious centre on an island scale for the aborigines.

Garajonay National Park, where Alto de Garajonay is located, is famous for its laurel forest, a type of humid evergreen forest. This park was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is also a Biosphere Reserve. It is the fourth and youngest national park in the Canary Islands and attracts a considerable number of visitors every year.
