The church of St. Nicolai was built from 1881 to 1883 according to plans by Helgo Zettervall. It replaced a previous building from the 1260s.

Today's St. Nicolai Church, west of the Trelleborg pedestrian zone, was built between 1881 and 1883. Before that there was a medieval church on the same site, but due to the growing city it had become too small and was demolished in the 19th century. The bell tower from 1617 is the only part of the previous building that was integrated into the current church.
