The Marienkirche, one of the most important Romanesque buildings in Northern Germany, is located directly on the market square in the pedestrian zone of Bad Segeberg city center. Construction began in 1156. It was the first building ever in which the vault was made of brick. The carved altar is a work from the 16th century.
The three-aisled brick basilica, which was first mentioned in a document in 1199, offers in its simple beauty the ideal setting for choir and chamber music concerts of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. The splendid carved altar, which was built around 1515, and the bronze baptism from 1447 are also particularly worth seeing.
