The Paddenbroek Country Center, located at the foot of the Kesterheide in Gooik and along the old tram bed, is a unique project where old and new come together. The centre, which is located on the site of an old country farm, is a beautiful example of architecture and offers a range of educational and recreational opportunities. The center has five strong pillars: agriculture, nature, sustainability, tourism/recreation and regional identity. In the gardens you will find a standard orchard with about 200 fruit trees, a pool, an ecological vegetable garden, small fruit labyrinth, a restored oven and a bee hall1. The center also offers space for seminars, workshops and meetings. The Paddenbroek Rural Center is a valuable addition to the cultural and historical heritage of the region.

There is also a good walking and cycling café here with, how could it be otherwise in this region, a wide choice of regional beers and young, enthusiastic operators.

At the foot of the Kesterheide in Gooik and along the old tram bed is the new Plattelandscentrum Paddenbroek.
It is the starting point for hikes in the Kesterheide to the Kesterheuvel, a so-called witness hill. At 112 meters high, it towers over the Pajottenland.

If you're not a geologist, a witness hill or mountain is a single mountain that was once part of a plateau and was then exposed by erosion.

From here you have a beautiful view of Brussels on one side and dozens of parish churches and villages on the other. In few places are heritage, landscape, nature, culture and agriculture as closely intertwined as here. Kesterheuvel, literally a green pearl in the landscape, is in reality a sand dune on the edge of a prehistoric ocean. Over time, the sand solidified into iron sandstone, allowing the area to withstand ice ages and eroding glaciers.

In the center's gardens you will find an orchard with around 200 fruit trees, a pond, an ecological vegetable garden, a small fruit maze, a restored oven and a beehive. There is also a small café where you can fortify yourself for the onward journey.
