The "Piano del Lago" covers an area on the upper southern flank of Etna at an altitude of approx. 2600 m between the "Torre del Filosofo" and "La Montagnola". In the past, a small lake of meltwater often formed in the area, which gave the area its name. Since the 2001-2003 eruptions, the area has been completely transformed and is now a gently sloping ash field.
