The district town of Eisenberg in Thuringia, with its approximately 11,000 inhabitants, is probably not one of the best-known towns in the Free State. However, the city's history has lasted for over 825 years since it was first mentioned in documents in 1196. This makes Eisenberg one of the oldest towns in Thuringia.

Duke Christian of Saxony chose the city as his residence in 1675 and rebuilt the existing castle in Eisenberg. At the same time he built a castle church, which is now considered one of the most beautiful baroque chapels in Thuringia.
