The Church of San Giovanni Battista is an important historical and architectural testimony of the Friulian city. It was built in the second half of the 14th century and was annexed to the adjacent Augustinian monastery until 1770.
Unfortunately the church was destroyed by the earthquake of 1976 and its remains were deliberately kept as a warning and memory of the tragedy.
Even today the ruins of the church are a symbol of the strength and resilience of the Friulian people. Although the facade was destroyed by the earthquake, some valuable elements are still preserved, such as the entrance portal and the rose window.
Inside, among the rubble, you can admire the remains of frescoes and decorations that once enriched the building.
Various architectural elements and various movable works have been recovered from the church, including the famous 17th-century wooden altar and some altarpieces from the 17th century. XVII and several fragments of the sandstone statue of the Madonna and Child from the early 15th century.
Despite its ruined state, the church is today a place of great beauty and historical value.
