The cohort fort Rainau-Buch was about 1.2 km from the Limes on a hill above the Jagst and near a trade route that ran from Augsburg (Augusta Vindelicum) to the Danube near Günzburg (Guntia) and from there via Aalen (Alae) to the Limestor at Dalkingen, about 2 km away. It was the location of an unknown partially mounted cohort (cohors equitata) of approx. 600 men, was built around 150 AD and was occupied until the Limes abandonment around 260 AD.
