The building was completed on the occasion of the celebrations for the 1000th anniversary of the capture on 4 October 1896. It was named Franz Joseph Bridge in honor of Emperor Franz Joseph. The name patron did not miss it, symbolically the last with the initials F.J. I. hammered (silver) rivet at the Pester bridgehead. A replica of the 1956 stolen original is now exhibited under a pane of glass. It connects Buda with Pest and was destroyed in 1945 by the Wehrmacht. Reopened in 1946 as Budapest's first bridge.
