In July 1792, the explorer Alexander von Humboldt took over the mining offices in the Franconian Forest. He settled in Bad Steben. Von Humboldt greatly advanced mining in the region and was very successful. In 1795, Alexander von Humboldt left Bad Steben to pursue new challenges. His traces can still be seen in many places in the Franconian Forest and the Fichtel Mountains.
