The dam was originally on Italian territory, but after its completion it came to Swiss soil through an exchange of territory between the two countries. Almost the entire reservoir - and also the associated natural catchment area, from which around a third of the dammed water comes - are located in Italy. Around two thirds of the water is supplied from the Avers, Madris and Niemet valleys or from the catchment area of the Sufers reservoir via the Ferrera power plant into the Valle di Lei.
