The spacious port in Ludwigshafen was inaugurated in 826 and named after Grand Duke Ludwig of Baden. At the beginning of the 19th century, Ludwigshafen was already a transit point for goods and a customs border with Switzerland and Austria. However, by the end of the 19th century, the transport of goods was shifted from water to rail. The mighty customs office building, the "Zollhaus", has been preserved from the brief heyday of Ludwigshafen as a trading center.
