The historic "Fonte Nuova" was built by the Municipality of Vasto in 1849 to increase the availability of drinking water in the town. Immediately after the landslide of 1816, the presence of rich aquifers underground gave a notable boost to agriculture and the "Fonte Nuova" provided refreshment to the numerous fishermen who transported their catch from the coast to the market above, in Piazza del Popolo.
Many farmers drew water from the "fishpond" to irrigate their gardens and washerwomen washed their laundry there.
