Originally a Grauwacke quarry, a water vein was struck in 1895. Despite many efforts, the water could not be drained and the quarry had to be abandoned. Over the years, a small lake emerged from a small pond, which the residents used to do laundry, and in winter to break ice for the Sonneberg breweries. At the end of the 1920s, a lively bathing business developed in the summer months with visitors from Sonneberg and the surrounding towns. The Königsee is still a popular destination for young and old, and is a cool refreshment especially in the warm summer days.

A really idyllic spot on earth. The lake is in a fantastic location, surrounded by beautiful forest. I am lucky that nobody is here except me this morning.
