The Bede Memorial Cross was built in 1904 in dedication to Venerable Bede and Eadfrith of Lindisfarne. Bede was a Benedictine monk, author, scholar, teacher and is often referred to as the 'Father of English History', thanks to his masterwork 'Ecclesiastical History of the English People'. Eadfrith was the Bishop of Lindisfarne in the early 8th century.

The stone carved memorial stands on the sea wall in Roker, looking out to the North Sea. It marks the start point for the Weardale Way, a 73-mile (117 km) long-distance trail across historic county Durham.
