Brienz Rothornbahn "it has been stamping and steaming since 1892"
It pounds and steams, it creaks and smokes: the only Swiss cogwheel railway with daily steam operation has been thrilling since 1892. Get on, the Brienzer Rothorn-Bahn will take you up to the top.
In 1838, the Flück brothers from Brienz ran an inn on the eastern slope of the Rothorn in the direction of the Eisee. Mules and sedan chairs were also used to get there and to the summit. On November 15, 1846, Johann Georg Kohl reached the summit with a guide. Only 4 days later the empty inn on the mountain burned down. Plans for a new hostel failed in 1854. With the support of the steam ship company, a large inn was built in 1866/67. The ride to the house with 33 rooms, dining room, lounges and stables cost 15 francs. Due to a lack of visitors, bankruptcy followed in 1872 and a new operator also gave up in 1874. This house burned down in 1885.
The Brienzer Rothorn has been accessed from Brienz (Bernese Oberland) by the Brienzer-Rothorn Railway since 1892. At first there was a makeshift restaurant because the construction of the hotel had been stopped due to lack of money. The Hotel Kulm, completed in 1894 with 32 beds, stands a little above the terminus. A new terrace restaurant was added in 1987. Today there are 100 beds. Since 1971, a cable car has been leading from Sörenberg even closer to the summit. In winter, this is the starting point for the ski area near the Eisee in the east of the mountain. This is reached through a long gallery, which allows winter-safe access.

The train has to be seen and, above all, driven 👌🏻

Once in a lifetime you should climb the Brienzer Rothorn in Brienz with the steam-powered rack railway of the "Brienzer Rothornbahn". A unique experience for young and old, with a magnificent view.
