The Salinelle dei Cappuccini are part of three similar sites in the vicinity of the municipality of Paternò. In each of these sites, volcanic activity in the subsoil generates the release of mud, salt water and gas to the surface. The Salinelle dei Cappuccini owe their name to the presence of a convent of the Capuchin friars towards the end of the 16th century, a convent later abandoned due to the unhealthy air.
