The pilgrimage church "Maria Rast am Stein" towers high above Hohenfurth.

Maria Rast am Stein is a place of pilgrimage, which has also settled under its German name among the local residents. This place is located below the village of Vyšší Brod (Hohenfurth) on the slope of the Martínkovský hill. The easiest access to the chapel is via the Way of the Cross, which you can get to from the market square in Vyšší Brod (Hohenfurth) via the green marked hiking trail. There is also access from Studánky and from the St. Wolfgang waterfalls along the same marking. The place where the chapel stands is also included in the map of mysterious places in Šumava. The actilite in the form of a granite block is characterized by excessive energy.

Short, hard climb, place worth seeing, trail down is great, but unfortunately too short

There is a granite block on the site, on which, according to legend, Mary rested with the baby Jesus. Therefore, in 1844, a picture of Mary in the snow was hung there. In 1887, shepherds built a small hut over the stone and decorated it with images of saints. The Abbot of Hohenfurth Monastery Leopold Wackarž (1810-1901) decided to build a pilgrimage chapel here during a visit. The chapel was built in neo-Romanesque style and consecrated by Abbot Leopold Wackarž on August 15, 1888. About 2000 pilgrims attended the mass. In 1890 a larger chapel was built next to the old chapel. In this there is a life-size statue of "Our Lady of the Snows" and the miraculous figure of the Madonna and Child. The pilgrimage site was built in reverence for the biblical story that Mary and Joseph stopped several times with the baby Jesus fleeing to Egypt. The old chapel is used as a picture gallery[1]. In 1898, the 14 Stations of the Cross and the Holy Sepulcher were built on a rock below the pilgrimage chapel. Below the rock there used to be an inn (the ruins are still visible), which served monastery beer, among other things.
