The lock system consists of a small lock built in 1899 and a large one from 1911 - 1915. It overcomes a height difference of 8 m. The 223 km long Dortmund-Ems Canal was inaugurated in 1899 after seven years of construction by Kaiser Wilhelm II (1859-1941). The reason for building the canal was the prospering economy in the Ruhr area. Ore had to be transported into the Ruhr area and coal out of the Ruhr area. In its course from Dortmund to Papenburg, the canal crosses three rivers (the Lippe, the Stever and the Ems) and two streets on bridges. Nearby, at the Nassen Dreieck, it is connected to the Mittelland Canal, the construction of which began in 1904.
