The windmill was built in the middle of the 19th century as a replacement for the Schmitz post mill in Heinsberg. It was in operation until 1921/1932. Today only the mill tower remains, which was badly damaged and taken over by the district in the early 1970s and restored. Today it functions as a rest area and shelter.
