The Kamo River is a popular recreation area for the people of Kyoto. You will see many joggers, couples and families along the river bank. The river is also a good place to see cherry blossoms, and many people visit the riverbank to admire them. Despite being a peaceful area, the Kamo River has been monitoring the history of Kyoto for 1,200 years. The Shijo Bridge near the entertainment district lies over the lower part of the river. On its east side is Gion, famous for the Minamiza Kabuki Theater, the birthplace of the Kabuki. North of Gion is the Sanjo Bridge, the rails of which bear a sword mark that was said to have been added during the Ikedaya incident (1864).

A walk on the Kamo River is a great way to recover from the big crowds. During the summer, restaurants open overlooking the river. This is called "Noryo Yuka". People dine al fresco on the balconies and enjoy the cool breeze of the evening. In midsummer the best place in Kyoto.
