Schmalkaden train station has a beautiful entrance building, inside it serves as a waiting room. The regular traffic runs via track 1, but there is also a siding section and a few sidings. Until 2011, the entrance building was used as an adventure station. Since 2012, the entire station area has been remodeled for the 2015 State Garden Show. The entrance building was completely renovated in 2013/2014 and completed in August 2014. Where the tracks to Brotterode used to be, there is now a well-arranged bus station.
