The Osterwall is the easternmost part of the Danewerk. It blocks the access to Schwansen between the marshy river lowlands of the Osterbek and the Windebyer Noor. The Osterwall protected the Schwansen peninsula south of the Schlei. There were several Viking Age settlements there. As in other sections of the Danewerk, natural obstacles such as swamp and water on Osterwall were strategically integrated into the wall system. At that time the western part, like the main wall, north wall and later the Kograben, was secured with a wooden palisade.
