Sainte-Marie-Majeure Cathedral, known as La Major, is the Roman-Byzantine style Catholic cathedral of the Archdiocese of Marseille. Located in the Joliette district, it stands on an esplanade between the Old Port and the port of Joliette, on the site of the old 12th century cathedral, from which the Occitan name “Major” comes. . Its architecture and interior decoration, in marble and porphyry, give it a particular appearance for a religious building.
The first stone of La Major was laid on September 26, 1852 by Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, based on plans by Léon Vaudoyer. The latter died in 1872, the construction of La Major was therefore taken over by the architect Jacques Henri Espérandieu, in charge of the Notre-Dame de la Garde site, student and collaborator of the first architect.
La Major was classified as a historic monument in 1906.
