The city on the Dender is not only worth a detour - there is so much to experience here that it would almost be a shame to only make a short flying visit.

Worth seeing are the former cloth hall, the town hall, the Belfry, the Church of Our Lady ... and so much more (by that we mean the many restaurants, cafés and brasseries where you can strengthen yourself for the onward journey).

If you want to strengthen yourself culturally, then take a look at the former Cloth Hall, a jewel of Flemish medieval architecture. Right next door, the bells ring regularly: the belfry, which was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999, has housed a carillon since the 16th century.

The Church of Our Lady is a magnificent example of Schelder Gothic and a true treasure trove of religious art. You'll find paintings by Flemish masters such as Anthony van Dyck, Gaspar de Crayer and David Teniers the Elder. There is also a beautifully carved pulpit, a stylish marble high altar and some extremely valuable murals.
