The Tresa river (commonly designated as feminine in Switzerland and as masculine in Italy) is the emissary of Lake Lugano near Lavena Ponte Tresa in Italy and Ponte Tresa in Switzerland and has its mouth in Lake Maggiore near Luino, where it flows and joins a few hundred meters earlier with Margorabbia. At the point where Lake Lugano flows out to form the Tresa, there is a bridge and a customs house. This bridge connects/separates Ponte Tresa in Switzerland with Ponte Tresa in Italy, a hamlet of Lavena Ponte Tresa.
