The origins of the smelting pond date back to 1776, when Count Sigmund Ehrenreich von Redern acquired the estate, including its farm and pond. He built a blast furnace for smelting bog iron ore. Through ore mining, a small pond became the smelting pond. The pond has been used in a variety of ways over the years. Listing them all would be beyond the scope of this article.
