The name Sasso derives from a large sandstone boulder on which an ancient Tuscan abbey stood in the eighth century AD. called "Badia di Sasso"....
Of that ancient abbey, active until the 1940s, no trace remains, since in the 1960s the remaining ruins were minced to form the basis of the more recent road (the one that can be traveled by car). The ancient path is the one that comes straight and steep from Berleta, the small hamlet that we find along the state road before turning onto the white road.
The Borgo was inhabited until 1962 and until the mid-1950s the space used today as a restaurant was the old and large stable for cows and sheep; in the other rooms many families lived, at least sixty people....
Until 1960 there was also a primary school with about ten children ....
For the next 30 years it was all abandoned, many roofs collapsed.
In 1990 the restructuring started, protected by the Superintendency of Fine Arts.
