Corniolo, like many other villages in the area, developed especially in the medieval period when a castle was built, of which only a few traces remain, in its vicinity. The village consists mainly of stone houses and still maintains its original appearance. Towards the end of the Second World War, more precisely in February 1945, the partisan forces acting in the area founded the Republic of Corniolo, the first example of an autonomous government fighting against German occupation.
