The history of the small town of Ankum goes back a long way. It was first mentioned in a document in 977, then under the name Ainghem. Mainly cloth was traded locally, as well as livestock to this day.

The Artland Cathedral towers proudly in the historic town center. Right next door you will find cozy cafés and restaurants that invite you to linger.

      Artland Cathedral

Roman Catholic parish church in Ankum, Lower Saxony
The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Nicholas, popularly known as Artländer Cathedral, is the landmark of Ankum, an old market town where cloth was once traded. The church, consecrated to St. Nicholas, is located on the Vogelberg, high above the market arches. The church tower is 79.3 m high and rests on a three-story substructure that was built in 1514 on the old church, which was probably built before 1100.

The old Ankum cross, which was built around 1280, is kept in the church. The current church was built after the fire in the old parish church in 1892 over a four-year construction period starting in 1896 and was inaugurated in 1900. Berlin sculptor Paul Brandenburg created the altar table, tabernacle, ambo (lectern) and other details such as the door handles.

Be sure to have an ice cream below the church. Delicious.
