This beautiful looking water where you are guaranteed to find beautiful flora and many water birds, insects and frogs today is actually part of a fairly complex ecosystem with more water in the area. It is an important part of the Winterbeek basin. It belongs to the large Demer basin and is located on the territory of Beringen, Tessenderlo, Lummen and Diest. The Winterbeek originates near the Beringen mine and flows into the Demer in Scherpenheuvel-Zichem. In between it changes its name: the Grote Beek, the Zwart Water and Hulpe. What you see here is one of the swampy remnants and mainly the result of water works in which the Kleine Beek plays a major role as a 'supplier' of water that also arises nearby.

The Kleine Beek, which, as you can see in the photos, runs into the pool here, supplies the Winterbeek with the largest flow rate. The ponds here, and the management of them, also have to deal with subsidence due to the exploitation of coal. But even before that, this was already a water-rich area. According to the old Ferraris atlas from 1778, the Winterbeek or Grote Beek ran from the source to the mouth through a valley with swamp pasture, also here. The Middelbeek and Kleine Beek also existed, probably to drain the swampy area of which you will find some traces here.

Many Komoters are also familiar with the valley of the three streams to which this is all connected. The pool itself has a path to walk around and is close to the cycle path through the woods and some hiking trails. Furthermore, just a place to enjoy and spot herons, coots and so on.

The high viewing chairs that have been added provide a pleasant distraction and added value.
