The castle of Nafpaktos is one of the best-preserved and architecturally most fascinating fortifications in all of Greece.
What makes it special is the seamless interplay of mountain and city fortifications, which extends from the top of the hill right down to the sea.
The Five-Zone System (Diazomata): The complex extends pyramidally over a hill about 200 meters high. Two long wall arms extend from the uppermost citadel (Acropolis), following the natural terrain. Four transverse walls connect these arms and divide the fortification into five independent defensive levels.
