As early as 1872, tourists discovered this long wooden pier as the ideal place to stroll, get some fresh air, and enjoy the sea. Thus, the Oosterstaketsel was an early precursor to the much better-known Belgium Pier, which was only built in 1894 on the other side of the sea dike.
