The canal is still quite beautiful here, but further towards Wüstenneutsch it is not so much. The Saale-Elster canal is a nearly 20 km long connection from the Saale to the Leipzig city port of Lindenau and from there to the water district south of Leipzig. The canal was started in 1933. By 1943, a good 11 km had been completed and flooded. After that, work was stopped and not resumed, so that 7.5 km are still unfinished and a huge, useless concrete colossus that was supposed to be a lock stands in the middle of nature.
