When a daughter named Ida was born to Duke Georg I of Saxony Meinigen in 1794, he gave the city of Schalkau a piece of land below the Schaumberg castle ruins.

The place was leveled and prepared by the citizens in the following years. Associated with the Ida-Platz Foundation was an “Ida-Platz-Cashier”, also donated by Georg I, the proceeds of which were to enable Schalkau citizens' sons to receive technical training.

In memory of the ducal gift, the Ida monument designed by master mason Johann Reichenbacher was erected shortly before 1800. “Our Ida” let the people of Schalkau cut into the stone out of gratitude.

Originally the monument stood in the middle of the square, it was only moved to its current location at the beginning of the 20th century. The square was given its present form in 1952. The "Schalkau bird shooting" was celebrated on Ida-Platz for 130 years. Then they moved to the Schützenwiese at the shooting house.
