The UNESCO World Heritage Site Sardona Tectonic Arena is unique in the world. Like every UNESCO World Heritage site, it has an outstanding universal value (OUV). This was described by the World Heritage Committee as follows: "The Sardona Tectonic Arena offers an exceptional and dramatic insight into the process of mountain formation caused by the collision of continental plates. The site is characterized by a clear three-dimensional expression of the structures and processes characteristic of this phenomenon in a mountain landscape, by its history as a research object and by its ongoing interest in geology" The combination of the following three aspects sets the site apart from other comparable areas: clear visibility of the phenomenon in a mountain landscape
History of the site as a research object (research history)
Ongoing importance for geology The Sardona World Heritage Site has great educational and scientific value as it is an outstanding witness to the understanding of mountain formation processes and plate tectonics.
