The "Hartig Monument"
About 5 minutes' walk west of the "Aldolfshöhe" is the "Hartig Monument" in the upper Eberhard. Georg Ludwig Hartig was the chief forester in the service of the Prince of Orange and worked in Dillenburg from 1797 to 1806. In the house at Marbachstraße 18, Hartig founded one of the first German forestry schools. The forest scientist made a special contribution to the systematic afforestation of the forest, which was being overexploited at the time. One of Hartig's statements, which is more relevant today than ever, is: "Every wise forest management must try to use the forests as high as possible, but in such a way that the offspring can derive just as much advantage from them as the generation living now appropriates."
The "Hartig Monument" was inaugurated by the "Historical Society" on May 31, 1907. However, today's plaque, which adorns the boulder, was not installed until 1926, since the old Hartig memorial plaque had to be delivered during World War I.
