Tips

  • The Horstsee owes its name to the striking island lying in the middle of the pond, which in old documents is called "the Horst". It was once artificially created by landfill when digging the sea bottom passing through the fish gutter. With its approximately 70 hectares of water, it has always been one of the largest waters in the old district of Leipzig. But it also has a peculiarity and rarity in itself:
Despite the fact that it was created artificially - probably at the beginning of the 16th century - by the erection of two dams for the use of fish, it is unlikely that such a surface of water at the same time lies directly on a watershed. Fed by the Saubach at Wermsdorf and a small tributary of the Wermsdorfer Walde ago, he has two outlets through the two mentioned dams. To the east, one feeds the upper reaches of the Döllnitz, which originated near Querbitzsch, and thus supplies water to the Elbe river basin. But its western outlet feeds the Rodaer See and after its flow through the Mutzschener water. This outflow thus benefits the torrent area of the trough.
