After the construction of the Döllnitzsee dam (1983) there was reason to erect a monument to the work of inland fishermen, in order to use tradition and progress as well as the natural
related work of the fishermen. The commission was given to artist Bruno Kubas (born in 1928) from Dahlenberg near Torgau. The monument was inaugurated on October 7th, 1986. The sculptures made of fireclay clay, approx. 3 cm thick hollow
bodies, had to dry for weeks and were then provided with a clay glaze. Without the earthenware craftsmen from the Torgau-Dommitzsch factory, he could not create his works. The approximately 120 molded parts, of which the large figurine segments weigh over 50 kg, had to be carefully placed in the kiln and slowly fired at 1260 degrees. The rock-hard parts of the stele were attached to a concrete column at the site.

In honor of the more than 500 year old inland fishing industry, this work of art has been set up, representing four fishermen, representing the activity and the closeness to nature of the fisherman.

With the construction of the Döllnitzsee between 1981 and 1983, the VEB Binnenfischerei Wermsdorf triggered an order to the Leipzig artist Bruno Kubas to build this work of art. This work was intended to show how tradition and progress in inland fishing are combined with the professional activity and the closeness to nature of the fisherman and his environment. In addition, the more than 400 year old inland fishing tradition in the area around Wermsdorf should be set aside.
