Monte Gelbison is the fourth highest mountain in Cilento. On the 1705 meters high peak, there is the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sacro Monte di Novi Velia, a destination for pilgrimages since the 16th century. From here the panorama opens up over the Cilento, the Vallo di Diano and the Gulf of Salerno.

The sanctuary of the Madonna del Sacro Monte di Novi Velia, known in Cilento more simply as the sanctuary of Monte Sacro or Madonna del Monte, is located in the municipality of Novi Velia on the top of Monte Gelbison, at 1705 meters above sea level. The religious site is a destination for pilgrimages since the fourteenth century and is known for being an extraordinary panoramic point over Cilento, Vallo di Diano and the Gulf of Salerno. Probably, in the same place where the Marian sanctuary is now present, there was an ancient pagan religious temple, built by the Enotri in honor of one of their deities, identified with Hera. The religious site was almost certainly already known at the time of the Saracens: in fact Gelbison seems to derive from Gebel-el-son, which in Arabic means "mountain of the idol". It is believed that the foundation of the Christian sanctuary, on the pre-existing pagan site, dates back to the 10th or 11th century by the Italo-Greek Basilian monks who settled in Cilento at the time of the Lombards. Initially the Basilian monks had to settle in the caves, of which Mount Gelbison is rich, to devote themselves to hermit contemplation, and then build a place of worship on top of the mountain. The first document attesting the existence of the sanctuary dates back to 1131, speaks of a rupis Sanctae Maria in the fief of Rofrano (the other side of the mountain with respect to Novi Velia) and is found in a Diploma given by Roger II the Norman, at Abbot Leonzio of S. Maria Grottaferrata. Later the Christian religious site would be enlarged and, having become a sanctuary, it was owned for a few years by the bishop of Capaccio but in 1323 Riccardo di Marzano, Marshal of the Kingdom of Sicily, duke of Sessa, count of Squillace, baron of Novi, prince of Rossano bought it to give it to the monks of the Celestine congregation of Novi, for whom he had changed his castle into a convent [1]: When the Celestine Order decayed and died out completely in the century. XVIII, the sanctuary returned to the bishop of Capaccio

The Gelbison is a mountain of the Lucanian Sub-Apennines of 1,705 m a.s.l. located in the province of Salerno. It is the fourth highest mountain in Cilento, preceded by the summit of the relatively close Cervati, by Panormo and by Faiatella

The sanctuary of Our Lady of the Sacred Mountain of Novi Velia is located on the top of Mount Gelbison, on the site of an ancient sacred pagan settlement.
